The Laboratory plays a central role in health care. How critical is the laboratory? By one estimate, 70% of all medical decisions are based on laboratory results. In tropical countries like Ethiopia, Microbiology Laboratory is one of the most dependable areas of pathology department because infectious diseases account for a majority of human aliments. The job of the Microbiology laboratory is to test specimens from patients for microorganisms that are, or may be, a cause of the illness and to provide information (when appropriate) about the in vitro activity of antimicrobial drugs against the microorganisms identified.
