Stem modularity of revision hip replacement stems allows individual patient geometry to be restored. But modularity also introduces interfaces that can increase the rate of failure. It was show that arrangement constraints for modular designs allow very small safety factors. Counter intuitively, increasing press-fit forces was not found to eliminate corrosion. The only solution to providing stronger implants for increasing patient demands were found to be the elimination of modular junctions and the introduction of one-piece monoblock endoprostheses.
