Beschreibung

This textbook provides a structured overview of the development and application of industrial radial and axial fans, combining fundamental principles with practical design approaches, in a unique concept. The first section introduces key performance parameters, outlines how to select a suitable fan for a given application, and explains the basic flow behavior within rotating impellers, including typical aerodynamic losses. The second section presents three established aerodynamic design methods for centrifugal and axial fans, offering a clear framework for understanding common design practices. The third section addresses fan noise, including its generation, propagation, and prediction, as well as possibilities for noise reduction through design. It also discusses flow-induced vibrations in fan systems and introduces psychoacoustic methods for assessing perceived sound quality. The final section provides an introduction to experimental and numerical methods commonly used in fan engineering. In addition, it includes an example of how machine learning can be applied to support data-driven design and optimization of fan impellers. The book is intended for students and engineers seeking a concise and coherent introduction to the analysis and design of industrial fans and fan systems. This book is a translation of the original German 5th edition Ventilatoren by Thomas Carolus, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2023. The translation by the author was supported by various artificial intelligence systems. Springer Nature is continuously advancing the development of tools for book production, as well as related technologies designed to support authors.
