The second volume deals with proven numerical methods for solving analytical problems. The focus is on numerical techniques for one- and two-dimensional interpolation, least-squares approximation, and the calculation of derivatives and definite integrals of real functions. Furthermore, the most important methods for the numerical treatment of initial and boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations are presented. Many of these numerical methods are implemented as m-files for the MATLAB software environment, allowing readers to experiment with the numerical techniques on their own and experience their advantages and disadvantages firsthand on the computer.The most important methods are available for download as MATLAB programs on the publishers website.

Autorenporträt

Martin Hermann has been a university professor of numerical mathematics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU) since 1991. His area of expertise is the numerical treatment of parameter-dependent nonlinear differential equations. For many years, he has been teaching the introductory course "Numerical Mathematics" for students of mathematics, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, and education, as well as specialized courses on selected areas of numerical mathematics. He is the spokesperson for the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing, a curator of the Collegium Europaeum Jenense at FSU Jena, and a member of many national and international professional organizations.
