After independence 7 decade has been past but till there is no complete enlistment of the flora of West Bengal. Still we have to depends on the Publication of David Prain "Bengal Plants". This book is not a complete account of the flora of West Bengal as the political and the physical configuration of the then Bengal province has been changed enormously. Not only that a lot of new introduction has been taken place which also enriched the floristic account of present West Bengal state, so to accommodate all these things within a single folder the present effort has been taken into account to statistically analysis the flora of the West Bengal state. It reveals that at present the state West Bengal possesses 4488 taxa of Angiosperms belongs to 1535 genera under 232 families. A detailed tabular form of the family genera and species in comparative account with that of David Prain's work is mentioned here. It can be accepted as a guide of the recent numbers of the flora of the state.

Dr. Sunit Mitra, FLS (London) (b. 28.12.1970)did his M.Sc. & Ph.D. from University of Kalyani. Presently Dr. Mitra worked as Assistt. Prof. in Botany at Ranaghat College. Dr. Mitra Published more than 35 Research papers and 6 Books. He is a LIfe MEmber of IAAT(India), Taxo Club, and in 2013 Dr. Mitra became a fellow of Linnean Society of London.
