Publishing in psychology in Europe and thus scientific and professional communication is aggravated by several barriers. Among these, language (there are 23 official languages in the European Union alone) and accessibility are especially severe. A survey carried out by the Institute for Psychology Information (ZPID) and a workshop at the International Congress of Psychology in Berlin 2008 shed light on a number of topics relevant to publishing in psychology in Europe. Six issues of main concern were raised: Language, review process, manuscript handling, impact (visibility), permission barriers (accessibility) and price barriers (cost). This supplement to Psychology Science Quarterly contains the results of the survey, detailed reports on the publication situation in 11 different countries in Europe (Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain) as well as visions on how to improve the situation. A plan has been laid out for an open access European psychology publication platform as a transnational cooperative project driven by the scientific community and research support institutions.
