Though teachers have equipped themselves with the necessary tools by undergoing rigorous workshops and employing new institutional strategies complemented by the huge amount of money spent by the government for textbooks, the results of the yearly achievement test prove that students still do not meet the mastery level. Hence, relevant factors that greatly affect the students' academic performance should be looked into.

Dr. Steven J. Sumaylo is presently the VP for Research and Extension and the con-current Supervisor for Student Teaching and Director for Publications at Siquijor State College. He obtained his Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English from Silliman University in 1993, MA Educational Management in 1998 and Doctor in Philosophy in 2010.
