Beschreibung

Basic sanitation is one of the services that most inspire concern at a global, national and local level, due to the numerous impacts that its inadequacy can cause to the health of the population, economy and environment. This book aims at presenting the relationship between the inadequacy of basic sanitation and the impacts in the several areas that suffer interference from that system. The book presents specific issues such as: the importance of the functions and services offered by basic sanitation; the sanitation situation in the Brazilian scenario; the social, environmental and economic impacts generated by the inadequacy of sanitation services; and, mitigating measures related to the impacts. Data show that sanitation has its importance in preventing diseases, besides that its absence or inadequacy may generate health impacts (such as gastroenteritis, bacterial resistance and cardiopathies); impacts on education, women's safety, work and family income; and also impacts on a nation's economy, such as losses on tourism and health investment. The necessary measures to be implemented were observed.
