Beschreibung

Corrosion of reinforcing steel in a continuous reinforced concrete beam greatly influences the structural performance, load carrying capacity and serviceability of a structure under both static and cyclic loading (Ahmad, 2007). Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures is the principal factor that necessitates the loss of material and non-linear properties of reinforced concrete elements. Deterioration of reinforced concrete beam due to corrosion of the reinforcement results in a reduction in the serviceability and eventually causes a brittle and disproportionate failure. Corrosion of the steel reinforcement in the reinforced concrete beam result in the loss of bond between the steel and surrounding mass concrete which arguably affects the rate at which the interaction force is been transferred within the internal properties of the concrete and leads to adverse deflection or bending, large size and amount of cracks, deterioration in the load carrying capability of the reinforced concrete and might also result in abrupt failure of the reinforced concrete under the slightest loading condition (ACI 408, 2003)
