The book gives a comprehensive overview on the crystalline state, starting form its importance, diverse, and complexity, including peculiarities of the crystal structure, over the manifold properties up to the use of crystalline materials in industry and in particular for material and energy conversion applications, including aspects of availability of resources and economic considerations as well as theoretical and experimental methods for their understanding.
