Antibiotic resistance is a growing worldwide problem.The antibacterial agents administered can be ineffective as they develop resistance against the target organisms and could be toxic to the host.Vaccines offer a solution to the overuse of antibiotics in dentistry. It consists of mild infectious agents which when given,evoke an immune response and induce specific immunity that has successfully prevented infectious diseases for several years and are still being investigated for many others. Periodontal vaccines can thus be one of its kind that can be considered against periodontal infections and can turnout to be a reality in the future.

Dr Manu Bhaskaran Nair is a final year post graduate pursuing MDS in Periodontology,JSS Dental College and Hospital,Mysuru.He completed his bachelors in dental surgery from JSS Dental College ,Mysuru in 2016.He has won a prize for his paper under the Basic Research category at the 18th Indian Society of Periodontology PG Convention,2019.
