Dental caries is the most prevalent of the oral diseases worldwide. Caries is considered to be an infectious bacterial disease resulting in lesions of the tooth hard tissues. In the past, dentistrys approach to treating caries has been surgical-removing of diseased tissue and replacing it with a dental restorative material. Emerging technologies like minimally intervention dentistry will facilitate evolution to primary prevention of caries, though obstacles to full implementation in clinical practice still exist. Minimal intervention dentistry (MID), a modern, evidence-based approach to caries management in dentate patients. The minimally invasive approach to treating dental caries incorporates the dental science of detecting, diagnosing, intercepting and treating dental caries at microscopic level, providing a cutting edge to the treatment of caries.so the current paradigm is prevention of extension, constriction with conviction and small is beautiful, which is aimed at maximum tooth conservation.

Dr. Deepa Prakash earned her MDS degree in Public health dentistry from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, India. She is actively involved in academic activities and also conducting numerous outreach programmes.
