Beschreibung
Classification systems help to assemble similar diseases phenotypes in more homogenous syndromes. Over the years, numerous attempts have been made by investigators for the development of classification systems of Periodontal diseases. Regardless of this, Classification of Periodontal diseases has been a subject of controversy. The most accepted classification is the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) 1999 Classification which was designed to overcome the drawbacks, problems and deficiencies of the 1989 classification. The classification of the disease helps in establishing diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan of particular disease. A Newer classification system has been developed in 2017 by AAP and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) to overcome the drawbacks of 1999 classification. Moreover the Peri-implant health/ conditions were not included in the 1999 classification as periodontal disease and Peri implant diseases shared almost same microbial profile. The new classification will help periodontist and general dentist to understand the etiology of disease in a better way and choose optimal treatment plan for periodontal disease.
