Embelia ribes is a medicinal plant, also Known as vaividang or vidang. It is one of the oldest herbs in Indian traditional medicine. It is traditionally used as appetizer, carminative, laxative, anthelmintic and in liver disease. The root, berries and leaves of Embelia ribes is used in herabal formulas. It contain the benzoquinone compound embelin, which is a main active chemical constituents. Embelia ribes have a various medicinal activities such as anti-bacterial activity, anti--fungal activity, anti-oxidant activity, anti-cancer activity, anti-fertility activity, analgesic activity, anti-convulsant activity, wound healing property, anti-anxiety activity, anti-genotoxicity, cardioprotective activity, mollusicidal activity, anti-hyperhomocysteinemic activity, anti-hyperlipidemic activity, anti-depressant and anthelminthic activity.
