The association between liver disease and diabetes mellitus is well known, the overall prevalence is significantly higher than that expected by a chance association of two very common diseases. In September 2013 a working group of outstanding experts in the field of hepatology, diabetes, nutrition, pharmacology, and specialist in EBM has participated in the development of evidence based guidelines for management of diabetes and liver disease association. One of the main aims of this work is to highlight the unique issue of diabetes associating liver disease and to start considering it as a separate type of diabetes like gestational diabetes.

Abd Elkhalek Hamed is President of "Diabetes and liver group" in the Egyptian Association for the study of liver and gastrointestinal disease, Treasurer of Arabic society for the study of diabetes and metabolism, Member of European association for the study of diabetes, Member in APASL and Member of Egyptian society of atherosclerosis.
