Beschreibung

The aim of this book was to investigate the effects of air pollution on the health of DM and NDM patients in Pune, India. Three principle objectives were investigated. i) Whether there is a link between short-term exposure to air pollution (up to one month) and increased systemic inflammation (i.e. CRP and WBC). ii) Whether long-term (1 year) exposure to PM10 pollution is associated with biomarkers of glycemic control (i.e. FPG, PPG, and HbA1c). iii) Whether long-term (multi-years) exposure to PM10 is linked to respiratory parameters (i.e. lung function and selected chronic respiratory symptoms). Methods: The first two objectives were addressed using retrospective data and the third objective was assessed using information collected prospectively. For the first research objective, we used data for daily air pollution and biomarker of systemic inflammation from the Pune Pollution Control Board and the WellGen study database (n=1700 DM) respectively. The associations were investigated using multiple regression analysis. For the second research objective, we estimated the ambient concentration of PM10 at the home address of diabetic patients using AERMOD dispersion modeling.
