"Classification has been one of the prime knowledge organization techniques used in the libraries and information centers to mark and park the books and other reading material. Classification being an intellectual activity it is both time consuming and demanding. At the same time, it is very complex activity as one need to consider many aspects of the subject of the document while classifying. Libraries are using information technology extensively in all library housekeeping operations except classification. On the backdrop of this automation of classification is very important. Efforts for developing automatic classification scheme are going on for quite some time. With computers limitations in understanding the natural language, there are some challenges in developing automatic classification scheme. Present book elaborates the challenges in automatic classification and suggests the methodology to develop such scheme for Physics. Book contains depth classification schedule for Physics, examples of classified documents, tables, diagrams, images and exhaustive references to substantiate the theoretical construct".

Dr Sanjay Desale is assistant university librarian at Jayakar Knowledge Resource Centre, Savitribai Phule Pune University, India. At present, he is in charge of automation and circulation section of the KRC. Library automation in general and automated classification in particular are his research interests.
