The present work is done on the basis of details of hydrological characteristics (surface and ground water) and fluvial morphology i.e., the fluvial landforms like cut-offs, bils, marshes etc., changes in riverine conditions in the study area obtained from various sources and more importantly intensive field study. In the lower deltaic part of Bengal, land use pattern is mainly dominated by the agricultural activity which forms the base of economy and productive alluvial soil supports huge population to earn their livelihood.To achieve the goal of 'holistic development' of society the most essential factors are the improvement of agricultural scenario, sustainable use of ground water resource, knowledge about the nature of floodplain rivers among the common people, floodplain zoning and new sources of livelihood. To achieve these goals, the present Volume has systematically presented the fundamental details, discussion, analysis and conclusion in 4 broad sections and 10 chapters.The study is a contribution to the field of applied geomorphology and environmental geography. To what extent has the present work succeeded is the subject to be judged by the readers.

Dr. Mitrajit Chatterjee, MSc (Gold Medallist) PhD is Assistant Professor of Geography in a college affiliated to The University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India. He has published 20 research papers and 2 books. He received Prof. N.P. Aiyyar Young Geographers Award, 2012. His areas of interest are pedology, geomorphology and environmental geography.
