Increasing attention is being paid in recent years to exploit the biotechnological potential of algal biomass as a source of industrially valuable compounds. Among such commercial ventures, mass production of some halotolerant algae other than Dunaliella for production of the fine chemicals, especially -carotene, glycerol and lipids. It has been shown that these algae accumulate a high amount of these chemicals when grown under abiotic stress, such as light intensity, salt concentrations, temperature and nutrient deficiencies.

Dr. Mustafa Ahmed Fawzy has obtained his PhD degree in Phycology in 2012. He has worked as Associate Professor in Botany and Microbiology Department, Faculty of Science, Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt.
