This book focuses on cartilage defects and new mesenchymal stem cell-based treatments for their repair and regeneration. Early chapters provide a review of current etiological findings and repair methods of cartilage defects. The next chapters discuss fundamental concepts and features of MSCs, including their proliferation, differentiation, migration and immunomodulatory effects. The discussion also includes clinical applications of MSCs in cartilage tissues, especially with regards to various animal models, biomaterials and transferring techniques. Cartilage Regeneration focuses on the biology of MSCs and their possible applications in cartilage reconstruction, with the goal of bringing new insights into regenerative medicine. It will be essential reading for researchers and clinicians in stem cells, regenerative medicine, biomedical engineering and orthopedic surgery.

Yunfeng Lin, D.D.S., M.D., Ph.D., is Professor of State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, Sichuan University. He serves as the Vice-director of State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases and Assistant Dean of West China School of Stomatology. He received his Ph.D. from Sichuan University in 2006. Dr. Lins research focus on adipose stem cells, biomaterials and craniofacial regeneration, such as bone, cartilage, tooth, fat et al. He has published over 100 papers, reviews and book chapters, and made several seminal contributions to the stem cells fields. He received Young Scientific and Technological Innovation Leader of China, Chinese Youth Science and Technology Award, Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award, Henry Fok prize for young teachers in Colleges and Universities, New Century Excellent Talents of Chinese Ministry of Education and National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of China.
