This book highlights the development of womens education in colonial Orissa. Womens education has been one of the most contentious issues in India since the early nineteenth century. It brings together the debates on the subject including the issues of women during second half of the nineteenth and first of the twentieth century, role of colonial government for the growth of womens education, the relationship between education and politics during the early part of the twentieth century especially the stand of nationalist leaders regarding womens issues, rise of educated middle-class women and their involvement in socio-economic and political spheres. It tries to explore the impact of education on womens life in Orissa. It also looks at the various aspects of private and public spheres in relation to womens education during the colonial period in Orissa.

Ajit Kumar Sahoo is currently a research scholar in Department of History at University of Hyderabad. His research interest includes socio-cultural and environmental history of modern India.
