India is urbanizing at a very fast pace. During the 20thcentury, urban population multiplied more than 10 times. Urban population is projected to become nearly 41% (611 million) by 2030 and 49% (763 million) by 2040. Due to undergoing urbanization & migration of population to cities for opportunities Indian mega-cities are facing an acute shortage in adequate housing. Therefore urbanization which may be worthy in terms of development has another face that of profiling illegal slums or squatter settlements in the urbanizing India.
