The banking sector plays a pivotal role in any economy for they provide the flow of funds to the various sectors. The Indian banking sector has played an important role in the economic development of the country. With the passage of time they have traveled a long journey and have faced tremendous challenges in their operation. With the era of globalization and with the emergence of banking sector reforms, Indian banks started operating in public, private & foreign collaboration. These new entries had brought technology, new banking culture, innovative products, mergers and amalgamations. Thus, there is a need to measure the financial performance of the banks in the continuous period of time. The study being comprehensive one covers selected public, private and foreign banks in India. For measuring and examining efficiency, growth and financial performance of banks in India, the data of all selected banks (top ten banks from each category public, private and foreign sector) have been collected. For studying the performance through different ratios, the pre-recession period from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and post-recession period from 2007-08 to 2013-14 i.e. 14 years have been taken.
