Excerpt: The oldest military band and symphony orchestra in the United Kingdom, and one of the oldest in Europe (and therefore in the world) with a long and distinguished history stretching as far back as the 16th century, the Royal Artillery Band serves as the musical arm of the artillery branch of the British Army, of the Royal Artillery, and from 1994 onwards has represented the service as part of the Corps of Army Music, as the senior military band of the British Army, and entire British Armed Forces. Existing European orchestras which predate that of the Royal Artillery's are: (1) Staatskapelle Dresden; (2) Staatskapelle Berlin, and (3) Leipziger Gewandhausorchester. The Band has much for which to thank its circumstances and justifiable pride, mainly owing to the ubiquity of the English Artillerymen (Honourable Artillery Company), and the subsequent formation of the English Artillery regiments, which would eventually become the Royal Regiment of Artillery, and for the rise of the Royal Horse Artillery at the command of the Duke of Marlborough.
