This is a wide-ranging review of the evidence on effective teaching approaches for primary age children. It evaluates the evidence carefully, leading to summaries of what is known to work, what is not known to work, and what is known to be harmful. The book answers the questions: What are currently the most effective approaches for teaching primary school children? Do the effective approaches differ for different sub-groups of pupils, and if so, how? Do the effective approaches differ for particular ages or phases within education to age 11? It is written by experts in reviews of evidence, and on evaluating the quality of evidence.

Stephen Gorard is Professor of Education at Durham University, and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in the UK. Dr Beng Huat See is a Senior Research Fellow, and Dr Becky Morris is a Research Fellow at Durham University, UK. They are concerned with the effectiveness and fairness of education systems.
