Around the world, cultural diversity is increasing in our school communities, especially amongst the large number of international schools. Students do best when taught by teachers who have a high level of intercultural competence, but how is this skill developed and measured? Research from four international schools located in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America reveal insights into the recruitment methods used by school leaders to employ interculturally competent teachers. Results from the research also provide specific recommendations for teachers, schools and universities as to how they can identify and develop intercultural competency amongst teachers and staff.

Dr Sally Hirsch has worked in schools and universities around the world. In addition to teaching students, Sally has worked closely with pre-service and experienced teachers on curriculum development, technology integration and inquiry-based learning. Her research focuses on teacher intercultural competency and its impact on student achievement.
