This book explores systems-based, co-design, introducing a „Decision-Based, Co-Design“ (DBCD) approach for the co-design of materials, products, and processes. In recent years there have been significant advances in modeling and simulation of material behavior, from the smallest atomic scale to the macro scale. However, the uncertainties associated with these approaches and models across different scales need to be addressed to enable decision-making resulting in designs that are robust, that is, relatively insensitive to uncertainties. An approach that facilitates co-design is needed across material, product design and manufacturing processes. This book describes a cloud-based platform to support decisions in the design of engineered systems (CB-PDSIDES), which feature an architecture that promotes co-design through the servitization of decision-making, knowledge capture and use templates that allow previous solutions to be reused. Placing the platform in the cloud aids mass collaboration and open innovation. A valuable reference resource reference on all areas related to the design of materials, products and processes, the book appeals to material scientists, design engineers and all those involved in the emerging interdisciplinary field of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME).

Autorenporträt

Professors Janet K. Allen and Farrokh Mistree are a wife and husband partnership whose passion is to have fun in providing highly motivated and talented people an opportunity to learn how to define and achieve their dreams. Anand Balu Nellippallil, the lead author of the book, is one such person. Together with co-authors, Dr. BP Gautham of Tata Consultancy Services, India and Professor A.K. Singh of IIT Kanpur, India, they mentored Anand in the completion of his dissertation on which this book is based. Janet holds the John and Mary Moore Chair in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. Farrokh holds the L. A. Comp Chair at the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. Janet received her S.B. degree from MIT in 1967 and her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973. She has co-authored one textbook, two monographs and over 300 technical articles associated with managing uncertainty inherent in simulation-based design associated with the integrated realization of materials, products and associated manufacturing processes, the design of mechanical, thermal and structural systems and engineered networks. She is a Fellow of ASME, an honorary member of Pi Tau Sigma and a senior member of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a member of SWE, ASEE, INFORMS and TMS. Farrokh received his B.Tech. (Hons) degree in Naval Architecture in 1967 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1974. He has co-authored two textbooks, two monographs and more than 400 technical papers dealing with the integrated realization of materials, products and associated manufacturing processes, the design of mechanical, thermal and structural systems; ships and aircraft; engineered networks. Farrokh is a Fellow of ASME and an Associate Fellow of AIAA. He was named the ASME Ruth and Joel Spira Outstanding Engineering Design Educator in 2011. In September 2012, he was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. In December 2012, he received the Life Time Achievement Award from the International Society for Agile Manufacturing, Lafayette, Louisiana. Janet and Farrokh co-direct the Systems Realization Laboratory at the University of Oklahoma. Their research focus is on collaboratively defining the emerging frontier for the "intelligent" decision-based realization of complex (cyber-physical-social) systems when the computational models are incomplete and inaccurate. Their quest for answers is anchored in six research thrusts, namely Codesign of Engineered Materials, Products, and Associated Manufacturing Processes KnowledgeBased Dynamic Management of Multistage Complex Processes KnowledgeBased Management Organized and Disorganized Complexity and Risk KnowledgeBased Platform for Decision Support in the Design of Engineered Systems Exploiting the FoodEnergyWater Nexus for Rural Development in India Contextual Assessment of Student Learning through Reflection on Doing Dr. Anand Balu Nellippallil received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering working with Professors Farrokh Mistree and Janet K. Allen in the Systems Realization Laboratory at the University of Oklahoma (OU) in September 2018. This book is based on Anand's doctoral dissertation. Anand received his M.Tech. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, India in 2014, and his B.Tech. degree in Production Engineering from the Government Engineering College, Thrissur, University of Calicut, India in 2012. Since November 2018, he holds a Research Engineer II position at the Center for Advan
