Preface - Proceedings AMK 2016 Welcome to Aachen. Welcome to the 16th Aachener Membran Kolloquium. As in the past 15 colloquia, the major objective of the AMK is to facilitate contact between the different actors within the membrane community: end-users, technology providers and academics discuss newest developments on product and process development. Our community tackles the grand global challenges such as energy and water supply, health and climate control. Our community is agile and vivid, and hopefully AMK will be as vivid. The present proceedings contain the abstracts and papers of the oral and poster presentations, giving you a summary on the topics and supplying detailed background information. You will find contact details for all companies participating in the industrial exhibition as well. We are glad to announce our two keynote speakers. Piotr Dlugolecki, Technology Manager at Voltea, will present the use of membranes in capacitive deionization - from R&D to full scale commercial application. The talk comprises the presentation and discussion of several commercial applications of Voltea's membrane capacitive deionization technique. Will this technology be Desalination 3.0? Hyung Gyu Park, Professor and Director of the group Nanoscience for Energy, Technology and Sustainability at the ETH Zurich, will allow us to look into the kitchen of theoretical and experimental efforts to predict and measure mass transport under graphitic nanoconfinements. Will the nanocarbon materials be the next big player in the membrane materials arena? The Aachener Membran Kolloquium is the only international conference where industrial lectures prevail, where industry meets and inspires academia and vice versa on the full breadth of membrane applications. We work hard to continuously shape AMK such that it remains one of the leading international conferences on industrial membrane applications. For this AMK, we succeeded to compose a well-balanced and exquisite program that will hopefully convince you to rejoin our Aachener Membran Kolloquium in the future. Until then, enjoy the lectures, the poster session, the industrial exhibition and the social events surrounding them. We thank you for your open and inspiring contributions. Matthias Wessling
