This book presents an integrated approach to design and optimizing performance for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. It details both the theory and application of cross-layer design approaches. Coverage first provides an overview of design issues in both strictly layered and cross-layer approaches. It offers an outline of each communication layer and surveys existing protocols for each of these layers. In addition, three case studies of diverse ad hoc and sensor network applications and communication technologies are included: RF sensor network monitoring network, Ultra Wide Band Radio ad hoc network, and Acoustic underwater sensor network. The case studies fully illustrate the benefits of the cross-layer design framework.
