This book introduces some of the key ideas of RF Superconductivity by using a pedagogic approach, and presents a comprehensive overview of the field. It is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the basic concepts of microwave cavities for particle acceleration. The second part is devoted to the observed behavior of superconducting cavities. In the third part, general issues connected with beam-cavity interaction and related issues for critical components are covered. The final part discusses applications of superconducting cavities to frontier accelerators of the future, drawing heavily on examples that are in their most advanced stage. Each part of the book ends in a problems section to illustrate and amplify text material as well as to draw on example applications of superconducting cavities to existing and future accelerators. FROM THE CONTENTS: * Basics * Performance of Superconducting Cavities * Couplers and Tuners * Frontier Accelerators

Autorenporträt

Hasan Padamsee is currently Adjunct Professor and Senior Physicist at Cornell University, where he is the project leader of the Superconducting Radio Frequency Group, pushing the advancement of accelerator technology for particle physics at the energy and luminosity frontiers. Conducting research and development in the field for more than 30 years, he collaborates with accelerator laboratories around the world, including Fermilab, Jefferson Lab, SLAC, CERN and DESY. He has published several books and many review articles in encyclopedias. Professor Padamsee was appointed Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1993. Jens Knobloch received his Ph.D. in RF Superconductivity from Cornell University in 1997 when he became a Research Associate at Cornell. In 2002 Dr. Knobloch joined BESSY to start a new program in RF superconductivity for Free Electron Lasers. He has given many invited talks at accelerator conferences and tutorials in RF Superconductivity. Tom Hays received his Master's Degree in RF Superconductivity from Cornell University in 1997 when he branched out into new areas of software development and consultation.
