Emerging technologies in communication industry has led to the formation of high-density data transfer needs. Information from one point to another should be transmitted quickly, lossless and in large quantities in a very short time by means of fiber optic transmission systems. Fiber optic transmission lines use light in communication media. This feature enhances to transmit much more information safely, even in environments that may have electromagnetic interference. Recently, a single fiber cable can reach to 20 TB data rate per second. It is used for transmitting or receiving high definition data in CATV, HDTV, internet, sensor design, lightening, medicine, automobiles, and aircrafts. This book is intended in the context of reference guide for students and graduates from different fields in fiber optic installation-maintenance courses. Summarily, historical information and physical properties of fiber optics, advances over classical transmission systems, optical communication and distribution systems, experimental structures of network backbones, practical applications such as connector installation and assembly, stripping and splicing the fiber optic cable.

Serkan Aydin received the BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in Electronics and Computer Education from Marmara University Technical Education Faculty and Institute for Graduate Studies in Pure and Applied Sciences. His research interests include data communication, networks, positioning systems, embedded electronic systems, and technical education.
