In recent years it has become clear that established views of the the motion of solids subject to shock compression are not valid at the microscale, and that refinements must be made to the theory if treatment of inelastic deformation, shock-induced phase transformation, chemical reaction, and many other phenomena is to advance. The chapters in this volume consider appropriate research objectives as we enter the new millenium.
