Beschreibung

Local hemodynamic factors influence the evolution of atherosclerotic disease and may contribute to explaining the differences in distribution and progression of different atherosclerotic plaques. The presence of a low wall shear stress favors progression of the plaque, while a physiologic shear stress has a protective effect in the vascular endothelium. These local hemodynamic parameters, and in particular, an increase in the wall shear stress, have been suggested to play a role in the generation and destabilization of vulnerable plaques. On the other hand, the flow velocity profiles are highly dependent on the condition of the blood and artery itself, and do not affect the stenosis significantly. The flow recirculation, however, is responsible for depositions of harmful materials and in this case there tends to be a notable region of recirculation despite the low degree of severity of the stenosis. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the flow behavior of Newtonian and Non-Newtonian blood flow through several 3-D stenosed arteries. Moreover, this is to provide a basic understanding of atherosclerosis.
