The light wire technique was developed empirically by Dr. Begg over a period of 20 to 30 years. A goal of Begg treatment is overcorrection of the teeth to allow for the natural tendency for relapse that occurs when orthodontic appliance are removed. Tooth movement is relatively rapid, and the appliance themselves do not have adequate time to function as retainers. Another unique feature of the Begg technique is that the movement of all teeth toward and beyond their desired final positions is initiated at the start of treatment that is to say; the movement of teeth is not segmented into groups, with one group waiting for another.
