Biotensegrity is an English word formation based on tension, that is, tension and integrity, wholeness, cohesion. The term stands for a mechanical model of biological structures and functions and for the architecture of living structures. This system is primarily about the principles of tension and compression. The model has far-reaching consequences for manual therapeutic treatment.

Dr Martin studied biotensegrity with Dr Stephen Levin and Tom Flemons. In 2009 she set up an international think-tank focussed on biotensegrity: the Biotensegrity Interest Group (B.I.G.).
