Introduction To understand the causes of multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases, to the extent to which that they are known today, it is important to have some basic knowledge regarding the construction and function of the central nervous system. In fact, multiple sclerosis may attack and damage the central nervous system anywhere. Therefore its forms are very diverse. Parkinson’s disease has a much more consistent course, since it is always caused by an attack on and degeneration of the nucleus niger, a pigmented core in the corpus striatum, one of the basal ganglia of the brain. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis also follows a typical course, since it almost exclusively affects the motoric nerve pathways that are responsible for muscle strength and action and therefore causes increasing paralysis. The explanations concerning some of the anatomical and functional situations in the central nervous system help to reveal the causes of these diseases and enable every patient to actively contribute in preventing and healing multiple sclerosis. This is a very rewarding undertaking.
