The prediction of an evolution process requires its initial condition which is unfortunately not always available or precisely given in practice. Data assimilation is the process of reconstructing model initial conditions from measured observations and the first guess field in combination with the dynamical system. Data assimilation is extensively used in meteorology, oceanography, weather forecast, environmental pollution, image processing, industrial production.
