Production processes for assembly lines in the automotive industry are characterized by a large variety of different vehicle variants. In order to define production processes for high variant assembly lines usually discrete mathematical models are used. Even though the automotive industry is not a typical territory for applying continuous models, there are many benefits especially when balancing workload at the assembly line. We are interested in modelling production processes in automotive industries by models based on partial differential equations. We derive a kinetic equation to model production flow on an assembly line. Numerical results based on data of an assembly plant are presented. The setup of a kinetic equation under the specific requirements of the automotive production process combined with the related macroscopic equation build the basis for further numerical analysis.
