The major recent feature in SQL Server is support for in-memory online transaction processing. It is one of the features Microsoft has been most vocal about. It includes support for tables that reside entirely in-memory instead of on-disk, enabling tremendous throughput and performance improvements. Also included in this feature set is support for natively-compiled stored procedures. These enable T-SQL to be compiled to machine code, again enabling tremendous performance improvements.
