Beschreibung

The 2-volume book explores cutting-edge energetic materials and techniques, focusing on innovations such as the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance material properties and performance. It delves into the combustion of micro- and nano-sized metals, which hold promise for improving the efficiency and power of propulsion systems. It also covers the sensitivity of energetic materials and carbon-free energy carriers, addressing environmental and safety concerns. Moreover, it discusses the latest developments in solid and hybrid rocket propulsion. Advanced computational techniques for modeling and simulation in combustion are summarized at the end.

Autorenporträt

Luigi T. DeLuca received his Ph.D. degree from Princeton University, USA, in 1976. In 1975 he founded the Space Propulsion Laboratory (SPLab), Politecnico di Milano, Milan, MI, Italy. In 2010 he was named Honorary Professor OmSTU (Omsk State Technical University), Omsk, Russia. In 2014 he was named Honorary Fellow of the High-Energy Materials Society of India (HEMSI), India. In 2015 Spring Semester he was named for the Brain Pool Program Korean Government and was Visiting Professor of Propulsion and Combustion at Konkuk University, Seoul, Korea. He worked as a Professor at the Space Propulsion Laboratory, Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy until his retirement by law (maximum age) in 2014 with a two-year part-time extension. Dr. Luigi T. DeLuca has authored over 300 scientific publications. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Nanjing University of Science & Technology, Nanjing, China. Ruth M. Doherty received her degrees in Chemistry at the University of Maryland (M.S in Organic Chemistry, Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry). In 1982 she embarked on a career with the Department of Defense and spent most of the next 33 years working at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in the field of energetic materials development and characterization, focusing on underwater explosives. She held program management and supervisory roles within NSWC, and also took on leadership roles in the Joint DoD/DOE Munitions Technology Program (1988 - 2008) and the NATO Energetic Materials Subgroup in the Ammunition Safety Group (US Principal Member, 2000-2008). From 2007 to 2012 she was the Program Executive Officer for Counter-IEDs in the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate. Dr. Doherty retired from federal service in 2015, but is still active in the community as a Senior Research Associate at the Energetics Technology Center, an Associate Editor of the journal Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics, and a member of the Scientific Committee for the annual Seminar on New Trends in Research of Energetic Materials. Her recent efforts have been conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University of Maryland and American University in the area of application of machine learning to energetic materials.
