Beschreibung

The objective of this book is to answer to the challenge posed to agronomists and plant breeders of the need to engage in research work that will enhance crop productivity in water-limited environments. With the rapidly increasing world population, projected to reach 9 billion by 2050, coupled with a hostile crop production environment due to climate change, the growing world food insecurity challenge calls on agronomists and plant breeders to provide answers. Water-soluble carbohydrates have been found to improve grain yield in water-limited environments. But there is limited information about their role under drought and free air carbon-dioxide enrichment conditions. Their role in maintaining grain yield was studied in wheat under field conditions as simulated at the Australian grains free air carbon dioxide enrichment (AGFACE) site in Horsham. This book is among the first to give insight into studies under these conditions. It also provides an easy-to-read-and-understand guide to conducting laboratory sugar analysis in plant tissues. It is a valuable resource to students, laboratory technicians and researchers.
