Beschreibung

This book reviews the state of irrigation in Malawi including challenges facing the sector and the promising opportunities for the sector. It is noted that water availability and land are not immediate constraints but financing is. The book conclude by noting that irrigation can fulfill many roles and not just food security. It is important not to define irrigation narrowly in terms of food security. It can contribute to household income, exports and foreign exchange. Commercialization of the irrigation sector in Malawi is encouraged. Smallholder irrigation for food security purposes will not get us very far. The Malawi Greenbelt Initiative with a role for private sector irrigation is encouraged.
