The Mirror Cracked, a work on the study of Indian women who lost their mothers in early childhood, is based on the hypothesis that such girls have difficulty in getting into heterosexual relationships. The book primarily looks into the theories put forth by W D Winnicott, Sigmund Freud, Hope Edelman, John Bowlby and Sudhir Kakar. It goes on to examine a few such characters from The Indian Cinema and bases its analysis through interactions with a few women who lost their mothers in an early age. The book would be of primary interest to students of psychology and sociology. In the absence of much work done on the subject in the Indian context, and with the book's focus being on the world of motherless women in the Indian framework, students and researchers especially looking for literature in the area would find it greatly useful.

Sriparna Bhattacharjee is a Post graduate in Psychology (psycho-social clinical studies) from Ambedkar University, Delhi. As a motherless and specially-abled child who lost her mother in an accident and also suffered an amputation, Sriparna has come a long way in life owing to sheer grit and determination.
