This Weill Almanac uses biographical sources, eyewitness accounts and documentation of the reception of his work to present a multi-faceted picture of the life of a composer who was one of the pioneers of modernist musical theatre. 365 days of events from and relating to the life of Kurt Weill create a kind of impressionistic portrait of his life, and document the history of music and the stage in the first half of the 20th century. The Threepenny Opera by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, first performed in 1928, became one of the successes of the century. Songs like The Ballad of Mac the Knife and Pirate Jenny are worldwide hits. In 1933 Germany lost this musician of the century. Kurt Weill and his partner Lotte Lenya emigrated to the USA where his conceptionally innovative works and many hits helped him to become a successful Broadway composer.
