Due to rapid increase in population, Pakistan is facing an acute shortage of housing units and lack of affordability is adding to this housing crisis. Currently, the residential skyline of Lahore exhibits that Vertical/Apartment housing is not as popular as detached housing. This study highlights Vertical/Apartment housing as a possible strategy to tackle increasing shortage of housing for the middle-income groups in Lahore. Furthermore, it explores the perceptions of people of Lahore about this type of housing in order to have a qualitative design basis for Vertical/Apartment housing and thus raising its acceptability. It is an initiative to accentuate physical, social & economic spheres of Vertical/ Apartment housing that still needs investigation and more in-depth analysis.

Ms. Shazia Hanif is working as Assistant Professor in Department of Architecture & Design, at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Lahore, Pakistan. She has done her B-Arch & M-Arch from UET Lahore. Research interests include housing and Issues of Housing in Pakistan. Her research has also been selected & published in international journals.
