Beschreibung
How can we understand a city shaped by centuries of migration, political change, informal development, economic pressure and constant transformation? In Hacking Istanbul, architect Alp Arda approaches Istanbul as a complex living system. Rather than viewing the city as a unified whole, he examines its fragmented urban landscape through architecture, infrastructure, politics, social networks, economic forces and seismic risk. At the centre of the study is Kartal, a former industrial district that provides a revealing perspective on the mechanisms and contradictions of the wider metropolis. Drawing on field research, interviews, historical sources, GIS data, maps, photographs and architectural drawings, Arda traces Istanbul's transformation from post-war migration and the emergence of informal gecekondu settlements to mass housing, global investment and today's rapidly changing city. The book introduces the concept of the architect as an urban or archi-hacker: someone who does not simply design buildings but reads the underlying structures and codes of the city and explores how they might be rewritten. Through the stages of De-Code, En-Code and Re-Code, Arda develops a method for understanding existing urban conditions and imagining alternative possibilities for the future. Hacking Istanbul offers a new perspective on Istanbul while also providing a broader approach to understanding contemporary cities as complex, fragmented and continuously evolving systems.
