This book analyses how agricultural transformation and rural industrialization helped the developing countries to upgrade into emerging economies and well-developed industrialized countries.It examines the important role of agribusiness enterprises in inclusive growth and economic development in China. China has had a significantly economic growth in the past several decades, while the country has achieved significant progress in poverty reduction, increase of income and transferring enormous numbers of farmers into employees in agribusiness enterprises. China has implemented the innovative institutions to develop its agricultural transformation and economic growth. Following up the innovative institutions, the majority of farmers have changed to engage in small scale families-agribusiness, and a large numbers of farmers have become the stakeholders in medium size or large size agribusiness enterprises. In addition, the technology changes have significantly contributed to the growth of agricultural sector, and property rights and ownership of agribusiness enterprises have impacted on technical efficiency. This book investigates how China's rural enterprises facilitated the linkages between rural and cities in process of urbanization, and helped to build up the value chain at domestic and international market. This book suggests that an inclusive growth of China's agribusiness enterprises can bring valuable development lessons to other developing countries. This book evaluates the role of institutions in forging farmers, agribusiness entrepreneurs, and family-based agribusiness vendors in a global value chain. Lei Sun is a distinguished Professor in International Development at ShanDong University of Finance and Economics, China, and was a visiting scholar in the Department of Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK. She was a Research Associate on the African International Affairs Program at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and she was an expert at the ad hoc experts group meeting for United Nations Economics Commission for Africa. She co-authored the Report of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and managed projects sponsored by United Nations Development Agencies Beijing Offices.
