This is the pathetic portrayal of the situation which comes in the words of Fred Sai (1989) the former president of International Planned Parenthood Foundation. Evidence shows that motherhood can be safer for all women if the indifference in creating the maternal health and obstetric care and inequities in its availability are removed. Unacceptably high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in most of the developing countries all over the world is a matter of grave concern.The life of a woman, starting from the birth as a girl child, goes on a rocky pathway in some of the rural, poor and disadvantaged groups of population, it runs to adolescence in poor growth, insufficient inputs to education, nutrition and empowerment skills. As a result, the adolescent girl either steps into early marriage before she reaches its full growth potential or soon goes to adolescent pregnancy. This cycle goes on repeating. The problem needs to be viewed as an unmitigated disaster affecting not less than 15 million women at reproductive age in a year, out of which more than 0.5 million actually die.
