The significance of handloom looms large when we focus our attention on the all-important way of life or the livelihood for a greatly deprived lot of the society. No one can gainsay that our life by and large hinges on three things that are a sine qua non viz. food, clothing and shelter. Hence, once the victual requirements are met, man has to look for covering himself to maintain his modesty. Originally, he attempted covering himself with the readily available leaves and leather before he developed the technique of spinning yarns and weaving fabrics. The invention of handloom is unquestionably among the wonders of mans evolution. It thus throws immense scope for our exploration to trace the inception of this illustrious cottage industry up to its progression to present time.
