1- Growing Global Interests: Because of several headline-generating nonviolent revolutions and movements in recent years (in Ukraine, Burma, Tibet and elsewhere), there is a growing global interest in the power of bottom-up, civilian-led movements for rights and democracy – as exemplified by the continuing substantial global demand for books and films like A Force More Powerful: A Century of Nonviolent Conflict (Palgrave, 2001). There have been no attempts to systematically study nonviolent resistance and its relationship to democratic development in the Middle East, which affords this book a unique general literature and scholarly niche. 2- Vast Appeal: B. The case studies, topical essays, and multidisciplinary focus will make the book of great interest to various academic departments and disciplines; the book could be assigned to undergraduate and graduate courses, in the United States and overseas, on the Middle East, international relations, nonviolent social movements, war and peace studies. 3- Stellar Contributors: Book contributors include prominent scholars, activists, and dissidents from the Middle East, thereby enhancing its readership. The fact that some of the chapters were written (or co-written) by activists who participated in the struggles they describe enhances the book’s excitement factor. 4- Strong Foreign Rights Potential: Books, articles, and films on nonviolent civil resistance have increasingly been translated into the languages of the Middle East, including Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew. The translation of this book into regional languages would open the door to a significantly enhanced readership by scholars, journalists, civic leaders, and policymakers in the Middle East. 5- Strong Buyback and Institutional Support: The International Center on Nonviolent Conflict, whose founders, Peter Ackerman and Jack DuVall co-wrote A Force More Powerful, is a nongovernmental organization dedicated to developing and disseminating educational materials related to nonviolent civil resistance, would be a major consumer of this volume -purchasing at least 3,000-4,000 copies in the first two years. 6- Big Name Endorsers: Author has initial promise from Larry Diamond and Vali Nassr for endorsement, but there will be others.
